great black white photographers #3

the photos are very simple and don't have many distracting features, the photo focuses on the subject more than the background. the show a lot of emotion in each photo.

i see sitting down and looking at each other. there are sorrowful faces in the crowd. the great depression is still going and the sad faces on peoples face because they cannot afford much an are limited to their income. i see a couple relaxing and having a good time 1 year before the great depression. they seem to be enjoying themselves.

i smell public transit. the smell of cigarette smoke i in the air. I smell the fair concessions at coney island.
i hear the train going on the tracks. i also hear people talking to each other. i hear the ruffling of the newspaper.
i taste fresh baked goods as the bakers had competitions. i taste the soda and other drinks. i taste the salty air of the Atlantic ocean.
i feel sorrow based on their faces and expressions. i feel the anger of the people towards the banks for closing. i feel the love of the couple at coney island 1 year before the great depression started.

i would like to make a blog along with posters of the preservation of the environment and the earth. to bring awareness of these issues.

abandon theme parks

i would like to go to the wizard of oz park because it looks like it was a "magical" place to be. the fact that it still opens for only 2 days a year makes it more limited and adventurous and special. i can take pictures of replicas from the movie see all the scenes. it makes it more creepier because it's all covered in shrubbery.

  1. Las Pozas, Xilitla Mexico
  2. Icehotel, Jukkasjarvi sweden
  3. Chernobyl
  4. Italy's abandon mill
  5. Belgiums I.M Cooling tower
i think that it would be fun to explore the jungle and find this. it would be cool to see what has happened when something is abandoned and gets overgrown. i would take photos of how the plants have taken over where the the building was. it would be cool to see how the plants grew in the concrete and how they survived.
i would just need to learn the story behind the abandonment of the building, then i would go and take pictures and explore. i would a camera that doesn't have a lens for long distance since i will go into the building. i would need to find a plane flight to Italy. i would need a guide to take me to the mill.

africa

what i saw was Nick Brandt's photos were trying to take pictures of the wildlife in their natural habitat before it is destroyed by man. many of his photos are in black in white because there would be so much to distract from the subject of the photo which is the animals in their natural habitat. he is a conservationist trying to bring awareness to the public about saving the animals habitat.
Image result for nick brandt
the reason why this is my favorite is because it shows a lot of emotion in the photo. there is no color to take away from the lions so that's all you focus on. it's very simple and conveys a lot sense of sadness and love.
the rules that are used is simplicity and balance. it uses simplicity because there is no other distracting features that take away from the subjects. it uses balance because there is two lions and takes up all the space and not much empty space. Also it uses framing by the subjects filling the space.
he does not use a telescopic lens he uses a smaller lens and forces him to get closer to the animals. the reason why it's important is because it creates a personal fell to the images.

the reason why he photographs is his photos because he is trying to take pictures of the wildlife in their natural habitat before it is destroyed by man.
his hope is to try to spread awareness of people destroying the natural habitats of these animals and to try to stop it.
“I photograph these animals - that specific elephant or cheetah or lion that has drawn my eye - in the same way I would a human being, watching for the right pose that pose fully will best capture his or her spirit. This means getting close. (Although frustratingly, I can't ask the animals to take a small step to the left, or lift their head a little.) This means getting close. It's one reason why I don't use telephoto lenses. I like to frame the animals within the context of their world - the sky and the landscape - rather than within a telephoto blur or scrubby ground or brushes. Other times, I'm searching for a panoramic view that I hope will convey some semblance of the rare synchronized spectacle of animals, landscape and light that can unfold, if one is very fortunate and patient.”Nick Brandt

Opening eyes
his newest purpose is to show where the animals used to be and put them in where the land was taken by infrastructure. it shows how much the world has changed where the animals lived.

he did it for the need to comment on the natural world's extraordinary speed of  destruction.

i think the effect of his work will bring attention on what the expansion of countries have on the habitat where the animals used to roam.
it made me feel sorrow and guilt of people for building cities where animals used to live and completely change and destroy the environment.

photo editing and ethics

A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images?
who's in charge,  who manages to release the photos, and what happens when no one is in charge.

B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times regarding image manipulation?

the photographers give proofs in order to turn in their photographs. the Washington Post and New York Times have very struct rules and ethics for their photos while others have less ethics. they do it to enhance their validity of the stories.

C. What do you think are acceptable things you could do to an image and not cross the line unto an unethical manipulation?
i think whats acceptable is to not do anything at all to the photo and keep it real and factual.

On your blog

sarahpalin1
i think that this is the most unethical because it could have hurt Sarah Palin's future as a nominee for vie president. it could have damaged her future chances to win any elections because of the bad PR the republicans might not choose her next time or at all.

daquila1

i think this is one of the least unethical manipulation because it's only to get family in the photo that were not there at the time of the photo. it does not cause many controversies because of just the inconvenience of that family member not being there. it's not really hurting anyone it's just to fix a problem.

great black and white photographers Part 2

Walker Evans was born in november of 1903. the date of his death was June 1976. he was 71 when he died only 5 months before his birthday. he was born in St. Louis Missouri a small town at the time. for education left after one year at Williams collage and went to go to New York City. He was working dead end jobs so his father sent him to France. Evans spent a year in France, where he audited classes at the Sorbonne and tried to write . he did not do very well at writing. when he returned to New York he lived the life of a writer in Greenwich Village albeit a writer with writer’s block and no significant publication record. His serious interest in photography had developed.
after all this in June 1935 he accepted a job at from the US department of the interior to photograph a government built resettlement community of unemployed miners in west Virginia. he did not write any books but he did pick out picture for magazines and other authors. the book American Photographs the 87 photos were selected by Evans. his true passion was photography and not writing.

2012 winners

 Balance - Helping hands
The reason why balance is present is because there is an even amount of people. It makes it more visually pleasing that there is even amount of people in the photo.
Lines - Hammer Time
the reason why this is lines is because the beams lead the eyes towards the kids face. the beams make the face unblocked and a direct line to his face.

the next shoot
  1. i think i would want to go to an art class
  2. most likely art or some class that is more hands on so it shows the subject doing something.
  3. try and use the rules and different angles and to be creative.

2018 winners

Emotion - Fluttering Curiosity
the reason why this photo conveys emotion is because you can see that their both that they both have a smile on their face and are actively happy. they both are enjoying what their doing and having a good time.
action and emotion - The Best Day Ever
the reason why this conveys action and emotion is because  the action and  emotion comes from her face and her movement it looks like she is dancing under the sheet. the emotion is coming from her smiling it looks like she is having a good time in the middle.
filling the frame - New Job, New Passion
the reason why this is filling the frame is because there are students surrounding the teacher and taking up the space. there is very little space that is not occupied by  a student.

peer reflection

post shoot reflection

  1. one of the challenges i had while shooting was trying to fund the proper rule  for each prompt.
  2. a technical aspect i found my self trying to get the focus just right and trying to get the right focus.  when i tried to get the simplicity i had to find the correct focus with nothing in the background.
  3. i would try to find one more rule like framing but i didn't find it in  the photos i took.
  4. i would do everything the same except for not finding the fourth  rule.
  5. yes because i can be more creative next time.  and get more photos

prompt shoot #1

Bowie - leading lines
the reason why this represents bowie is because it has the logo.
the reason why i chose leading lines is because the tiles lead to the logo

square - symmetrical balance i also got leading lines with it
the reason why i chose these is because the lines lead your eyes to the red squares. the reason why i chose symmetrical balance was because there is even number of squares in the photo.
happiness - balance
the reason why i chose happiness was because it looks like you are about to leave and go home and that brings joy of less stress. the reason why i chose balance was because there is an even number of doors
simplicity - metal
the reason why i chose simplicity is because there no distractions in the background so you can focus on the light post.

911 composition

 framing
the reason why i chose this was because it shows the subjects clearly and no unnecessary elements. It also focuses on the subject of the guy on the stretcher.
diagonal lines
the reason why i chose this is because the diagonal line of the flag pole leads to the flag or the marine. it also uses simplicity because there is no other distracting factors in the background or the foreground.
 rule of thirds
the reason why I chose this was because for the rule of thirds his head is in the top right and it diverts your eyes to it.
simplicity
the reason why I chose this for simplicity was because it focuses on the first responders and the victim and doesn't have anything in the background or the foreground to distract the eyes.

 balanced
tthe reason why i chose this was because the weight of the image is evenly spread because of the soldiers walking to the truck

border merger
the reason why I chose this was because the guy on the right was cut off unintentionally. also the guy in the striped shirt's feet are cut out of the photo
