magazine part II

You also need to know a little more information about the types of magazine covers that have been used over the years. Here are the most common types:

Cover types

1. Image-Based
mostly used for fashion there are very very few people on the cover. the intent of the cover is to attract the viewers' eyes to it. the photos look very professional and it is very clear what it is trying to convey. meant to focus on one item and that is the center of the picture.
2. Illustration Based
used to present something funny or out of ordinary and there are not so many magazines that opt for illustrated covers. A magazine that uses illustration to explain and elucidate, Weapons of Reason aims to provoke action by making complex issues more accessible for the reader. the intent is to set a tone and pique a reader's interest.
3. Type Based
Type based cover pages tend to be striking and even shocking. they are mostly used to inform people of a subject. mostly used in academic settings. sometimes used for entertainment. more formal than other types of magazines. type based is used more than illustrated cover pages. the background makes your eyes get drawn to the words in the center.
4. Concept-Based
it is the best when it is used to present a strong message, in a shocking or just the opposite, funny way. The main trick to the concept based magazine covers is that they have to be instantly understandable. it is a metaphor for the topic that they are talking about.

Finally, what is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?

the relationship for image based magazines is that the words go around the photo so it won't take away from the subject.
the relationship for the illustration based magazines is that there are very few words on the cover the main focus is still on the drawing.
the relationship for type based magazines there are no pictures associated with this type of magazine so the words stick out and your eyes get drawn onto the words.
the relationship for concept based magazines is that there are very few words on it the main focus is what the subject is representing. the main topic is in one or two words in plain sight.
